National Crypto Monitoring Platform — for CBN & SEC
A real-time cryptocurrency monitoring platform for Nigeria's Central Bank (CBN) and Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) — regulatory oversight infrastructure with no existing playbook.
The Brief
Design a national crypto-monitoring platform that enables the Central Bank of Nigeria and Securities & Exchange Commission to track, analyze, and regulate cryptocurrency transactions across the country. This was groundbreaking work — regulatory crypto oversight infrastructure with no existing playbook.
Design Challenges
Complex Data Visualization
Massive transaction volumes, multiple cryptocurrencies, cross-border flows — all needed to be comprehensible to non-technical regulatory staff.
GIS-Based Transaction Mapping
Geographic visualization of crypto activity across Nigeria's 36 states, identifying hotspots and anomalies.
Wallet & Hash Tracking
Interface for tracking specific wallets and transaction hashes without overwhelming users with blockchain complexity.
Real-Time Monitoring Dashboards
Live dashboards showing transaction volumes, suspicious activity alerts, compliance metrics.
Design Approach
1. Hierarchy of Information
Created multi-level dashboard system:
- Executive overview: High-level metrics for decision-makers
- Analyst view: Detailed transaction analysis and filtering
- Investigation view: Deep-dive tools for specific wallets/transactions
2. Making Blockchain Readable
Translated complex blockchain data into human-readable insights. Color-coded risk indicators, natural language summaries, contextual explanations.
3. Geographic Intelligence
Interactive map showing crypto activity by region, with drill-down capability to individual transactions. Heat maps for identifying concentration patterns.
Communication Design
Beyond the platform itself, I designed policy collateral for the CBN supporting national policy adoption:
- Executive briefing documents for policymakers
- Visual explainers for cryptocurrency regulation frameworks
- Public-facing communication materials
- Internal training materials for regulatory staff
Significance
This project represented a critical moment in Nigeria's regulatory approach to cryptocurrency. At a time when crypto regulation was uncharted territory globally, we built infrastructure that gave Nigerian regulators visibility and control over a previously opaque system.
Lessons Learned
Complex systems require simple interfaces. The more complex the underlying data, the more important clarity becomes in the UI. Regulatory users aren't blockchain experts — and they shouldn't need to be to do their jobs effectively.
